The Why? Music

Music changes lives.

If someone told me when I was 16 I would be working in the music industry when I was older, I’d probably respond with, “No.”

Even better, if someone would have told me I’d be working in music publishing, I’d probably respond with, “What’s music publishing?”

Yet here I am, running a small music publishing company in Nashville, TN called Plaid Flag Music.

After graduating and my collegiate sports career ending, I had no idea if I would ever feel the same excitement or adrenaline.

Changes of momentum. Long drawn out points. The excitement of competition.

A little over two years ago, I somehow got thrown into this music world and had no idea what to expect or what to do.

I’ll be the first to admit, I still have so much to learn, but I have fallen in love with publishing.

My very first pitch meeting, I felt a tinge of nervousness mixed with excitement. The same adrenaline and feeling that would come over me before stepping onto the court for a big match. That second, I realized I may have found one of the things I was supposed to do.

I’m so excited to announce the music section will contain the launch of my first podcast, Warrented: Women In the Entertainment Industry.

The idea for this podcast came to me about a year ago when I looked up and realized every person and mentor of mine was female. My publishing mentor, my entertainment attorney, my music industry mentor, and the list goes on and on. Somehow for the first time in my life, I found myself surrounded by amazing, successful and powerful female leaders.

This podcast is not made to the exclusion of men, but found this as an opportunity to highlight and give a platform to successful women in the entertainment industry to talk about their career path including their background, struggles, achievements and more.

I could go on and on, stat after stat about the misrepresentation of women in the music and entertainment industry. I’m practically late to the game. Organizations like Change the Conversation and Song Suffragettes are already doing incredible work to combat and bring awareness to these issues here in Nashville and nationwide.

One thing you’ll learn about me through this whole process and one of the reasons I chose to do this podcast is that I love humans. I love meeting and getting to know them but more importantly, I like learning what’s underneath. I like knowing why people do things and what they are thinking. I believe that is why I truly wanted to do a podcast focusing on empowering females each episode and diving into their lives.

In journalism in college, I never quite found what I loved until a senior class focusing on long in depth feature stories. Nothing made me more excited than trying to write a feature on a human who was willing and vulnerable enough to talk with me and let me in.

So I want to use this platform to highlight these women’s paths. Their struggles. Their triumphs.

Each episode will feature a woman in the entertainment industry. Artists, journalists, managers, songwriters, publishers and so on.

I’m hoping to drop four episodes in a month. One every week then take the next month off to record and edit more. So every other month there will be four new episodes.

First podcast episode scheduled to drop August 21st!

And that’s pretty much the lay of the land!
